SPECIAL PRESENTATION

The New CalOSHA Aerosol Transmissible Disease Standard (and What This Means for Employers and Employees Regarding H1N1 Flu)

Deborah Gold and Bob Nakamura, Senior Safety Engineers with Cal/OSHAs Research and Standards Health Unit, Co-chairs of the Advisory Committee for the Aerosol Transmissible Disease Standard.

The Cal/OSHA Standards Board passed the (ATD) standard on May 21,. It took effect August 5th in California workplaces such as hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, prisons, homeless shelters, clinics, medical offices, drug treatment programs, and laboratories. The standard also covers paramedics and other emergency medical service providers. Cal/OSHA actively works with public health authorities to provide information and guidance on occupational safety and health and to ensure that appropriate protection is provided to all employees who work in health care and other jobs that place them at increased risk of exposure to the novel type A influenza virus, H1N1 (swine flu).
